Common name: Java fern

Overview: The plant got its common name as Java Fern after its place of origin- Indonesia island of Java. It can also be found in Thailand, Malaysia and some parts of China. If getting a plant with rhizomatous growth is your preference, Microsorum Pteropus could become your ultimate choice. Easy to propagate and making the aquarium look highly alluring this plant is one must-have species in the aquarium. This plant doesn’t require the substrate for getting planted as the roots die off when they get buried inside it. Absorbing maximum nutrients from leaves the roots are only used to remain attached to the aquarium.

Appearance: Taking the height of 15 to 30 cm Microsorum Pteropus is a rhizomatous plant which can be grown on the stone. The length of the plant makes it a good background plant to grow in the aquarium. The propagation of the plant is very easy where splitting the horizontal rhizome is enough to get more plants. There are black spots beneath the leaves which are sporangia- the reproductive organs of the plant.

Ideal water temperature: Microsorum Pteropus thrives best in the temperature of 60-83° F.

Lighting conditions: This plant thrives well under low light conditions. It neither requires carbon dioxide nor strong lightening conditions for proper growth. Once the plant gets attached to the surface, it starts expanding and growing perfectly.

Ideal pH Level: The pH level of 6.0-7.5 is considered best for the proper growth of the plant, therefore, an alkaline medium should be maintained throughout.
